"Mulch Ado About Nothing" is the 19th episode of the first season of The Suite Life on Deck. After Bailey gets homesick, Cody tries to cheer her up by recreating the Kettlecorn Mulch Festival, but things go wrong when Bailey's ex-boyfriend, Moose, shows up.

Story[]

This episode starts off with the Suite Life crew getting packages from home. Bailey ends up getting a package full of mulch from back on the farm in her hometown Kettlecorn, Kansas. The package makes her homesick, then causes her to shut herself in her room, watching home videos.

In the meantime, Cody feels sorry about Bailey being homesick, and London is going crazy listening to Bailey's crying and home videos. Cody then forms a plan to cheer Bailey up by recreating the Kettlecorn Mulch Festival right on the S.S. Tipton. He plans to make her dream of becoming Corn Queen come true and to make himself Corn King, upping his chances with Bailey.

Cody and the rest of the crew work hard to recreate the Mulch Festival, but Cody is panicked making sure everything is perfect. He even lets Mr. Moseby be the caller so that he could use the Sky Deck for the party. When Bailey arrives at the party, she is surprised and grateful to Cody for everything he had done. Just as they are about to hug, London pulls Bailey aside showing her own little surprise for her: her ex-boyfriend Moose. Bailey, in her excitement, forgets all about Cody's effort and embraces Moose. Even though Bailey is happy, Cody is furious and jealous because this was his big chance to impress her, but he is overshadowed by Moose.

He tries to get London to get rid of Moose, but she ends up getting him to stay. So throughout the whole festival, Cody ends up trying to beat Moose in anything he can. Cody makes several attempts to beat him which includes him bobbing for corn (which he almost drowns in and makes Moose look even better, for he saves Cody), arm wrestling (he gets slammed off the table by Moose), and in chess (Cody also loses to Moose, even in an area of his forte). And all the while, Moose has been winning Bailey prizes and impressing her even more.

After all the competition is over, Moose comforts Bailey about being homesick (which he found out from Cody earlier). He tells her that he knows what's best for her and says that she should go back to Kettlecorn with him.

Now Mr. Moseby announces the Corn Queen and King which Bailey and, much to Cody's disappointment, Moose wins. After the crowning, Bailey confides in Cody that Moose told her he loved her and that he wants her to move back to Kettlecorn. Bailey, trusting him as a friend, asks for Cody's opinion on what to do: to stay at Seven Seas High or to go home back to Kettlecorn. Cody almost tells her to stay (so that she could be with him), but not wanting to take advantage of her trust, he tells her to follow her heart.

Taking Cody's advice, Bailey tells Moose that she does miss the farm, but she has so many adventures she doesn't want to miss by leaving, so she tells him that she is going to stay on the ship. She also tells him that the reason they broke up was because he always thought he knew what was best for Bailey, which he didn't. Moose then storms off saying he'd rather take Mary Lou (a girl with one tooth) to the movies. Cody tells Bailey how worried he was that she might leave him (but he covers it up, not wanting her to know his true feelings just yet), and Bailey comforts him by telling him that she would miss him (but also covers it by saying she would miss everyone else too). In the end, Bailey ends up finally thanking Cody with a meaningful hug which flusters both of them.

Quotes[]

  • Woody: (Zack plays with a muffin) Ooh, there's one left. (steals the muffin from Zack) I got it. Mine, mine, mine.
    • Cody: You ate the rest of them?
    • Zack: Should we take him to the infirmary?
    • Cody: It's Woody. He once ate a tetherball, remember? We had to pull it out with a rope. (All shudder)
  • Cody: Besides, I've got other stuff on my mind right now.
    • Zack: Wait, let me guess. Next month's homework?
    • Cody: No, I already turned that in.
  • Cody: I've got it. We can recreate the Kettlecorn Mulch festival. Then we can elect Bailey corn queen and me, corn king.
    • Zack: Why do you get to be corn king? Why can't I?
    • Cody: Because the king can't have a GPA of 0.75.
  • Bailey: If my pappy is passed out in a pickle barrel then this must be the mulch festival.
    • Cody: (to man) You heard her pappy. Get in the barrel.
  • Moose: We're here together now, thanks to your roommate. Who, by the way, was surprised to find out I'm not actually a moose. She sent a cage and everything.
  • Moose: (giving Bailey a sheep doll) "I love ewe."
    • Cody: That was supposed to be my line.
    • Zack: If the next competition is whining like a little girl, you're going to win by a mile.

Trivia[]

  • Moose is played by Hutch Dano who plays Zeke Valconi in Zeke and Luther, another Disney show.
  • Cody reveals that Zack's GPA is 0.75 in this episode. An F is a 0 GPA and a D is a 1 GPA.
  • This is Bailey's first appearances after a three episode absent.
  • Mr. Moseby broke the fourth wall at the end of the episode saying Y’all come back now ya hear before winking at the viewers.

Goofs[]

  • Cody and Moose's hair appears to be wet a few seconds before the corn-bobbing begins. Since the two haven't stuck their heads in the water at this stage, this would be impossible.
    • The take used in this episode would've been filmed after Cody and Moose stick their heads in the water.
  • Zack pulls Cody out of the barrel yet when Moose accepts his prize, you can see in the bottom corner that Cody is still in it.
