"Band in Boston" is the 9th episode of the first season of The Suite Life of Zack & Cody. Zack, Cody, Max and Tapeworm make a band called Rock Squared to compete in the band competition at the Tipton, but the band gets partly broken up when Zack and Cody fight.

Story[]

Zack, Cody, Max, and Tapeworm start a band called "Rock Squared" to win the event at The Tipton Hotel, The Battle of The Bands. Zack only cares about the clothes and keeps on messing up the words of the song Cody wrote. On the other hand, Cody only cares about the music sounding perfect, resulting too serious and strict. The brothers end up fighting and Cody leaves the band. Max and Tapeworm realize they can't do it without Cody's lyrics, so they push the twins in a closet to force them to work out their disagreements. Max tells Muriel to let the brothers out only once they had done it, but the woman falls asleep. While in the closet, Zack and Cody sort of manage to make peace and decide to go out and join the others, but they realize they're locked in. After a while, the bands start getting ready but the twins aren't on the backstage yet, so Max and Tapeworm go check on them, only to find out that they crawled into the air conditioning to get out of the closet. When it's their turn to perform, Zack and Cody arrive on stage just in time thanks to Arwin's help, and Rock Squared wins the competition.

Meanwhile, Maddie and Lance's band, the Waterworks, is having trouble too. Someone got water in their instruments, and Maddie is really upset because they can't pay for new ones. When London hears Maddie talking about that, she says that she will fix the instruments on the condition that she can also be in the band. After playing the tambourine and complaining, Maddie and Lance decide to let London sing with Maddie, only to find out she also sings horribly. So, the moment of their performance, they turn London's microphone off so that she can't be heard. When London figures it out, she simply thinks her microphone is broken and asks Maddie to share hers. When Maddie refuses and London asks why, Maddie blurts out the truth. Hurt and embarrassed, London runs off the stage and into the lobby. Maddie follows her, in order to apologize, and at the end, London forgives her.

Quotes[]

  • Cody: Hey, what's the big idea? We need to practice for battle of the bands.
    • Zack: Yeah, they're holding it here at the Tipton. And the winner...
    • Max: Which is gonna be us.
    • Zack: Gets to cut a demo CD.
    • Carey: Listen--
    • Zack: We're gonna become rock stars.
    • Cody: And perform all over the world.
    • Tapeworm: Yeah!
    • Carey: Guys, you're gonna have to practice someplace else. There have been some complaints.
    • Zack: Who?
    • Muriel: Everybody in Boston.
    • Carey: But don't worry. I have the perfect place for you to rehearse.
  • Zack: Aw, not again.
    • Cody: I can't work with these constant interruptions.
    • Mr. Moseby: Sorry, boys.
    • Max: I'm a girl.
    • Mr. Moseby: Whatever. We've had some complaints about the noise. But worry not, I have a place where your band can jam it to the Max.
  • Zack: Gee, I kinda' feel bad for you. Our band has great music, killer wardrobe... and we're also 12 and cute.
    • Maddie: Yeah, well, I'm 15 and hot.
  • Maddie: Wow, five grand. Nobody's got that kind of money.
    • London: (laughs) "Nobody's got that kind of money." That's cute. (suddenly realizes they weren't kidding) Oh, you were serious?
  • Cody: I can't understand the words. What I wrote is "I missed the bus as it came around."
    • Zack: Who cares?
    • Cody: I do! "School's Out" is an exposé of the trials and tribulations endemic to the public school experience!
    • Zack: Do you know what he just said?
    • Max: Yeah, he never gets girls.
  • London: I don't like this tangerine!
    • Maddie: No, that's a tambourine! A tangerine is what the audience is gonna throw at you.
  • Carey: (to Zack) Did I ever tell you about when I was in my first band?
    • Zack: Yes.
    • Carey: And how we couldn't work together and eventually broke up?
    • Zack: Yes. And then your boyfriend stole your car and ran off with your best friend...
    • Carey: Yeah, yeah, okay. And what did we learn from that story?
    • Zack: You need to pick better men?
  • Carey: (to Cody) Did I ever tell you about when I was in my first band?
    • Cody: Yes.
    • Carey: And how we couldn't work together and eventually broke up?
    • Cody: Yes. And then your boyfriend stole your car and ran off with your best friend.
    • Carey: Yeah, we don't want to relive that part. Now what can you learn from that.
    • Cody: That I was right and Zack was wrong.
    • Carey: That's not what... (Cody leaves) Oh, well, I'll try again later.
  • Max: Will you guys stop fighting?
    • Cody: We are not fighting. We are having a creative discussion.
    • Zack: We are too fighting.
    • Cody: Creative discussion!
    • Zack: Fight!
    • Cody: Discussion!
    • Max: I can't believe you guys are fighting about if you're having a fight!

Trivia[]

  • This is the only time in the entire Suite Life series in which Zack is seen playing a guitar, hinting that he knows how to play the instrument at least a bit. A guitar can be seen hanging in Zack's cabin during The Suite Life on Deck.
  • This is the first time Cody is seen playing a keyboard, hinting that he knows how to play the instrument at least a bit. The only other time he plays it is in the episode "Crossing Jordin" of The Suite Life on Deck.

Goofs[]

  • Zack's guitar playing isn't correct. When he makes different effects, you just see him strumming the guitar.
  • When the band is playing in the contest at the end, Cody crashes on stage from a laundry cart and there is a sock hanging from his collar. It is there for a couple scenes, then disappears, then comes back, then disappears again.
